Hey, he wrote letters to his brother Theo about being misunderstood, irrelevant, and being rejected. He feared he wasn't good enough. Emily Dickinson had over 1,800 unpublished poems discovered on her death, which made her famous posthumously. Franz Kafka wanted his unpublished work burned after his death etc, etc.

I’m surprised you see Van Gogh et al as afraid of being seen. That’s not my take at all. The world was too afraid to see them.

Simple yes... but not always easy.

Interesting statistics... I restacked this post and people are asking me the reference. Can you let me know?

Hey Orna...I took a look at your post because I wasn’t sure which statistics you were referencing. Like Pareto's principle, it is metaphorical and not literal.

It maps onto the 90–9–1 participation inequality principle, popularised by Jakob Nielsen in the early 2000s through research on online forums and communities. The idea is: roughly 90% of people lurk, 9% engage (likes, comments), and 1% actively create or post.

Variations of this pattern show up across domains, it’s commonly estimated that around 1% of readers leave reviews on platforms like Amazon or TripAdvisor.

Thanks so much Jake. My particular interest is in how the creative process maps on life (money, relationships, home etc.) Are you up for podcast interviews? I'd love to have you on to discuss this 'cringe factor' sometime.

Sure, love to. Fire me over some options, and we'll get something locked in. jake@creativehackers.co ✌️
