In 1960, two men had a $50 bet.
One of the men was Theodore Geisel a.k.a Dr Seuss. The other was Bennet Cerf, the co-founder of Random House Publishers.
Cerf challenged Geisel to write a book using only 50 unique words.
The result? "Green Eggs and Ham"
Dr. Seuss's best-selling book.
Dr. Seuss was known to procrastinate.
He often found it difficult to start projects because he was overwhelmed by too many choices, which led him to spend hours doodling or daydreaming instead.
Cerf, aware of this, created the challenge to focus Dr. Seuss’s creativity.
This wasn’t the first challenge for Dr. Seuss
While working in advertising, William Spaulding, director of Houghton Mifflin’s educational division, tasked him with writing a story that first-graders couldn’t put down, limited to 225 words from a standard vocabulary list.
Geisel failed, using 236 words, but went on to publish "The Cat in the Hat" in 1957, which quickly sold a million copies.
Dr. Seuss was 53 years old.
He was a multi-talented multipotentialite, overwhelmed by his many ideas.
