4-minute read ( for a deeper insight 👆)
Modern life is complicated.
We’re all stuck on a hamster wheel of fake ass bullshit fueled by greed.
The politicians lie
The media lies
The corporations lie
But I have a cheat code for an authentic life.
Think backwards…👇
Follow the mainstream?
The system never made sense to me.
I started rebelling at 13.
It made no sense to follow a system that made no sense.
So I refused.
They told me I was crazy and sent me to child psychologists.
We are surrounded by societal structures and rules that don’t make sense to us and stop us from experiencing our creative potential.
We are the opposites to neurotypicals.
So why do we follow their systems?
Why do we play the neurotypical game of life where the odds are stacked against us?
To fit in?
To be accepted?
To be liked?
Why do we hide our true selves to be accepted by a society that rejects us?
If we’re not living a life that is true to ourselves is it any wonder that we feel lost and disconnected?
But this is not new thinking.
Socrates was the first of hundreds of philosophers to challenge the status quo and promote independent thinking over 2,500 years ago.
The general philosophical consensus is to live a life of meaning and purpose one must stop conforming to societal expectations.
Life is backwards
Alan Watts often talked about backwards law.
"The desire for security and the feeling of insecurity are the same thing. To hold your breath is to lose your breath.” — Alan Watts
🧠 This quote illustrates how the act of seeking security itself creates insecurity.
🧠 The more we try to grasp and control, the more anxious we become about losing that control.
🧠 For control of anything external to us is merely an illusion.
This is also true for those who seek purpose. The more we seek purpose the more we feel lost.
The pursuit of happiness creates misery as it highlights the voids you feel when devoid of happiness.
"Muddy water is best cleared by leaving it alone.” — Alan Watts
🧠 This quote illustrates, that worrying and overanalysing a problem can make it worse — this is SO me!!
🧠 Letting things go we cannot control often leads to a natural resolution, much like how muddy water settles and clears on its own if left undisturbed.
By following our curiosity and surrendering to the flow of life, we often find that these desired states arise naturally without experiencing anxiety.
Inversion thinking
Thinking backwards is also a problem-solving tool created by multipotentialite mathematician Carl Jacobi.
This strategy was popularised by Charlie Munger another famous thinker and multipotentialite.
"All I want to know is where I’m going to die so I’ll never go there.” — Charlie Munger
🧠 This tongue-in-cheek quote illustrates the essence of inversion thinking: by understanding the worst outcomes, you can take steps to avoid them and thereby steer towards better outcomes.
Charlie had a good sense of humour. He passed away last year so this strategy didn’t work 😆
Business Strategy:
🧠 Example: Instead of asking, "How can we succeed in this market?" ask, "What are the ways we could fail in this market?"
🧠 Identifying potential pitfalls and avoiding them will guide you towards success.
🧠 Application: Make a list of all the reasons your business will fail and then avoid them
Productivity:
🧠 Example: Instead of asking, "What habits can make me more productive?" ask, "What habits reduce my productivity?" By eliminating these negative habits, one can naturally become more productive.
🧠 Application: Make a list of habits that destroy your productivity then avoid doing them.
Purpose:
🧠 Example: Instead of asking “ How can I find meaning and purpose in my life?” Ask, what ideologies drain me of energy, feel inauthentic and leave me unfulfilled?
🧠 Application: Make a list of all the habits, ideologies and interactions with others that drain you and leave you feeling inauthentic, and unfulfilled and then avoid doing them.
You are unconventional.
The answers you seek are rarely — if ever — in the conventional wisdom of the mainstream.
By focusing on what to avoid, we create a clearer path to what truly matters.
Focusing on what truly matters leads to a more intentional, authentic, and fulfilling life.
I highly recommend it.
